An earthquake rattled the ancient Zen temple. Parts of the building crumbled before the eyes of the terrified monks. Finally, when the tremors ceased, their teacher spoke.

“Well, you’ve had an opportunity to observe how a true Zen practitioner reacts in moments of crisis. There are lessons to be learn from this situation. Did you notice that I showed no panic at all? I was perfectly aware of everything that was happening. I also knew what to do. I directed you all to the kitchen because it’s the strongest area of the temple – a good decision in retrospect, since no one has suffered injuries. And yet, in spite of my self-control, I admit to some feelings of tension. You must have guessed that, when you saw me drinking a full glass of water, something I don’t normally do. ”

One of the young monks gave a small smile, but said nothing.

“Why are you smiling?” asked the teacher.

The monk replied, “That wasn’t water you drank, master. It was a glassful of soy sauce!”
